Craig got Hill on the ground early and went to flip him around. As he did that, Craig got a hold of Hill’s arm between his legs.

As he flipped Hill around, Craig completely snapped the lower half of Hill’s arm out of the socket, making for a wild scene. At one point, HIll’s arm was just dangling and flopping around in the hold before the referee stopped the fight.

Jamahal Hill Suffers Gruesome Arm Injury in Loss to Paul Craig at UFC 263
amahal Hill’s light heavyweight bout against Paul Craig at UFC 263 ended with a horrific arm injury that referee Al Guinee appeared ready to let the 30-year-old fight through.

Hill’s arm was significantly battered but he continued to stay in the Octagon as long as possible as the first fight on the main card. Guinee eventually called the bout in a technical knockout for Craig at 1:59 of the first round—much to the criticism of multiple people on site who felt the official waited too long before ending it.

The desire of Hill to stay in the fight is understandable. The Chicago native entered the night undefeated at 8-0-1, most recently defeating Ovince Saint Preux via TKO (punches) at UFC on ESPN: Hermansson vs. Vettori last December.

That helped launch him into the light heavyweight rankings where he entered Saturday’s event as the No. 15 contender—one spot behind Craig at No. 14.

As much as Hill wanted the win, there will continue to be questions over why the bout was allowed to continue after one fighter had suffered such a gruesome and apparent injury.

UFC 263: Referee criticized for allowing Jamahal Hill to keep fighting with badly injured arm
Jamahal Hill had just suffered a gruesome arm injury in his UFC 263 bout vs. Paul Craig on Saturday. Craig bent Hill’s lower left arm with an armbar as the fighters were on the ground. The forearm was clearly going in the wrong direction. (SN will not embed video of the injury in this article.) And yet, Hill was still fighting.

More precisely, Hill was allowed to keep fighting because referee Al Guinee appeared to miss what had happened.
Craig told reporters in his postfight press conference that he knew the injury was bad and tried to get Guinee’s attention.

“As I soon as I passed his arm across my heart, I knew it went,” Craig said. “I knew all the ligaments had went. You could feel it, you could see it. . . . Mentioned it to referee, like, ‘His arm’s gone, his arm’s gone.’ I can’t remember exactly what I said. There was maybe the F in there as well. The referee couldn’t see it.”

Craig said that he wasn’t sure whether Hill was trying to tap out or his arm was just flapping. Either way, the fight continued. Craig threw several strikes from his back as he controlled Hill, and then Guinee called it.
